Part 1
Keisha:“Did you hear about Beverly?”
Debbie: “Nah, what happened?”
Keisha:“She got evicted from her flat, the one on the fifth floor. She hasn’t been getting her housing benefits. The council said they were gonna sort it out, but it’s been like six months”
Debbie:”That’s deep man; she’s got two youths innit?”
Keisha:“Yea man and I think she and her man split up as well. He’s gone back to Trini...or is it Tobago?”
Debbie: “Is it? What’s he doing out there?”
Keisha: “I heard he works on the beach you know, as a security guard in a hotel that’s right on the beach or somefink like that, can you believe it? While Bev is struggling over here, he’s lounging on the beach somewhere, probably not even finking about her”
Debbie: “Does he send her any money?”
Keisha:“Yea, but chump change innit. It’s like 12 TT dollars to a pound, so she don’t really see much doe from whatever he sends after she converts it.”
Debbie:“That must be hard for her boy, hard for him as well, but he’s probably loving himself out there in that sunshine...Anyway that’s my bus, I’ll see you later yea? Bye”
Keisha:“Aight later!”
On the bus, Debbie remembered a guy from St. Vincent once told her that there are a lot more people complaining about the sunshine that enjoying it. To some, the scorch of the midday sun can feel like more of a burden than a blessing.
